I agree with Anthony. There is a difference between a right to the pursuit of happiness, and a right to happiness.

Great topic, Jedidiah.
Even though your questions are framed more generally, considering communal living regardless of the particular mindset or belief system of the group, much of my interest in the topic has to do with Christian living and the obvious observation that has been gnawing in the back of my mind for years that Christianity in America (as a whole) seems to be fairly far removed from the simple examples we see of the early church in Acts 2, Acts 4, etc. It is becoming increasingly clear to me how "institutional" the Church in America is (and I believe wrongly so) and how important it is that Christians should (voluntarily) strive to live in a far more communal way. The amount of "letting go" required would be very hard for most Christians living in the American culture (myself included), but I have no doubt we can "grow" towards this ideal if we so choose. I am interested in hearing of your personal experiences in this area.

Sorry, Grant--somehow I didn't get your post up until today--I thought I had approved it previously. Your next comments shouldn't need any approval process--they should just get posted when you post them. Anyway, everyone else, Grant's real life contributions a couple weeks ago (that these comments previewed) were great, as usual.

Excellent topic, as usual. I plan to respond to the question from a statistician's perspective (even thought I'm technically not a statistician). Basically, we always make judgments concerning the probability that something is true given all the information and experience at our disposal. If we allow new information to modify our judgment of that probability, then we are keeping an open mind. If we judge something to be true with 99% confidence, we can certainly act on that confidence, but we venture into dangerous territory if we act as though it were really 100% (i.e., certitude concerning things that are in fact not certain).

Anyway, that's the preview.

Fear is valuable as an impulse, but it often clouds our better judgment. It needs to be a factor, but not our deciding factor. Some fears are rational, some are irrational. Rational fears should be factored into our decision making, but not control them. Our irrational fears should in no way be considered, due to their irrationality.

Oh, and death should absolutely not be feared. I guarantee you that we are all grains of golden sand creeping into the pitiless wave. Regardless of our concept of an afterlife or lack thereof, we all need to accept that. I personally don't think there is anything else out there than what we have right now. So what do I do? I try my hardest to live life to its absolute fullest. And that, my dear friend, is why I try to go to this MeetUp whenever I can.

Wow, Dave, you don't even need to meet, now. I've got it all wrapped up! :)

Hi, Lana!

It's Living Hope Church. We meet at the Verona Senior Center at 10am on Sundays (think "community center", not "old folks home"). We'd love it if you'd stop by and visit! Or check out Gray's Theology, our actual in-person discussion forum that my blog exists to support.

I haven't had the pleasure of attending Sugar River UMC (the one that meets in the old library building), but I've heard good things.

How long have you lived in Verona? What a great town, no?

Thanks for stopping by my blog!

Hey, I live in Verona. I am wondering where the church is that you're involved in within Verona? I'd like to check it out. Is it the one in the old Library building?
